Taylor Klein, a freshman studying business, and Jacob Durham, a freshman studying general education, met randomly in the Nordic the first week of school and found that they share a strong bond between them. They both love lacrosse. Therefore, they decided to bring the sport they both love to BYU-Idaho.
Klein and Durham held meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 2-3, to introduce the sport to students. Around 70 students showed up, which was vital, because the lacrosse team needs as many supporters as it can get.
“If we get 50 people to sign up, we will have the support we need from the administration,” Durham said.
Now with 70 students, they will be able to make this an official sport. BYU-I-sponsored lacrosse will not be a contact sport, so players cannot hit one another with their sticks.
There will be practices twice per week, each Tuesday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where students learn how to play and possibly play contact.
The practices will be held in the upper fields, which are now the official lacrosse-playing fields.
“They are ours, so if you want to get your friends together and go play, you can anytime you want,” Klein said about the upper playing fields.
There will be separate leagues for the boys’ and girls’ teams. A co-ed league may be organized later, depending on demand.
“I’ve always wanted to play lacrosse,” said Lacey McQuade, a sophomore studying elementary education, “It sounds like a fun sport and I am excited that it is finally coming to BYU-Idaho.”
Equipment needed when playing in the recreational games is a lacrosse stick and eye protection.
If those players who want to play lacrosse do not have sticks, they are available for $30 apiece at www.laxworld.com.
“If you don’t have 30 bucks, go donate some plasma,” Klein said to the students in attendance at the meeting.
Students who were not able to attend the meetings or would like to sign up to play can contact Taylor Klein at kle07002@byui.edu or Jacob Durham at dur07004@byui.edu.
