Rise and shout — really

As a BYU sports fan since birth, I’ve been decked out in royal since my first receiving blanket and lulled to sleep by the sweet sounds of my father and grandfathers yelling their lungs out during every game, every time a play occurred — whether good or bad.

Does this scene sound familiar to you?

Going to football games was a must for me, and I have many fond memories of singing the BYU fight song while high-fiving my dad and brothers and doing victory dances.

Before I knew BYU-Idaho existed, my fondest dream was to go to BYU and join the crazy student fans who shave their heads and paint them blue and white for every game.

Then my sister went to BYU-I, and everything changed. I felt that I really wanted to be here. My joy in BYU sports faded somewhat as I realized that intercollegiate sports didn’t happen here.

Then I got accepted and everything changed even more. I got on a flag football team and had a blast at every game and practice that fall.

Winter semester, I got a job at the Alumni and Friends Center and talked with many alumni who felt cheated by the sports program being taken away.

I know that enthusiasm for a sport is even more ingrained in some people than it was in me; for some, it’s like being without food to not be up to date on their favorite sport.

But have you ever tried to digest all the news about sports and then come up with satisfactory coverage of it all? If you’re nodding your head at this statement, please make your voice be heard. What are you a fanatic about? Recreational or competitive sports here on campus? Football? Professional or college? What coverage do you want?

I want to hear what you think. Write me at scrollsports@byui.edu□
