Love Hurts

Six devoted tennis players braved a Saturday morning that started out cold, windy and snowing, to play in the tennis tournament at 10 a.m. The air was frigid enough that many could see their breath as they walked.

Still, they played.

“I was dedicated and just wanted to hit around,” said Harmony Sullivan, a sophomore studying photography.

After discussing their options with Kenneth McAffee, a freshman studying business and coordinator of the tournament, they decided to move to the Hart Fieldhouse.

The players called up friends and siblings to come play. By 11 a.m., there were five teams ready for the tournament to commence.

Because of such late notice in reserving the courts, the players only had one hour to play in the tournament. The tournament was done with single eliminations and short matches.

The players teamed up in mixed pairs. Most of the players had only played with their partner once or twice before the tournament.

In the end, the Diggers, consisting of Julianne Sullivan, a senior studying elementary education, and Jon Grimm, a junior studying chemistry, dominated the courts.

They first played the team Domination, and won with a score of 4-1. They went on to play team Rocky, and the Diggers again won with a score of 4-1.

Meanwhile, two other teams played to see who would play the Diggers for the championship. Jeff Simmons, a sophomore studying accounting, and Eva Villareal, a sophomore studying music, won but had to leave early, making the Diggers the champions of the tennis tournament. □
