Straight from the Hart

Competitive athletes at BYU-Idaho with injuries ranging from blown-out knees to tendonitis have a place to turn for help in returning to their respective fields of play.

The treatment room in room 161 of the John W. Hart Physical Education Building benefits injured students and also offers invaluable experience to students training in the health care industry. The treatment room is staffed entirely by students, including six sports medicine coordinators and seven volunteers.

Many students already take advantage of this resource by using the treatment room to recover from injuries, while many other students are not acquainted with the program.

“There are a lot that use it for their benefit, when they find out about the program,” said Linsey Knutson, a junior from Sterling Heights, Mich. Knutson is one of the six sports medicine coordinators on staff in the treatment room.

Knutson and Brian Hellstrom, another sports medicine coordinator in the treatment room, are dedicated and love the service they provide. “I like working with the people, helping them to get out and be active again,” said Hellstrom, a junior from Littleton, Colo.

The main scope of the treatment room is not to provide a full rehabilitation, but rather to help athletes immediately after the injury takes place. Knutson and Hellstrom also said that students with long-term injuries should try to make appointments before coming in for treatment.

The treatment room is open Monday through Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The treatment room is closed during devotional. Volunteers are always needed and welcome and must pass the 355R Health Science course. □
