New policies mean more can play

Changes in Recreational Sports policies mean increased opportunities for athletes this summer. “One of the new changes is that we got rid of our Viking, Leisure and Thor divisions, and decided to go with two separate divisions instead—Independent and Ward,” said Recreational Sports Assistant, Ellen Davis.

Previous guidelines prevented students from participating on more than one team in a single sport, but now they can play on both a ward and an independent team at the same time. Another change in policy pertains to off-track students. “[Students] are allowed to participate in Rec Sports and Competitive Sports on [their] off-tracks without any fees, as long as [they’re] matriculating,” Davis said. Matriculating means the students are admitted into BYU‑Idaho and will be returning for an upcoming semester.

Rec Sports offers opportunities for some who do not attend BYU‑I. Davis said students’ spouses can play without paying any fees.
Another change is that Rec Sports offers dodgeball as a league again. Rec Sports hosted dodgeball and futsal tournaments last winter instead of leagues. This summer dodgeball, but not futsal, returns as a league.

“Futsal is going to be an event, but we’re also going to be offering soccer,” said Davis.

Soccer is just one of eight sports available this summer. Students that are organizing a team must attend a captains meeting unless they have captained a team in the past. These meetings are at 6 p.m. on April 26 and May 3 in the John W. Hart Physical Education Bldg., room 120.

Captains who attend the first meeting and register a roster can expect games to begin as soon as May 1. Rec Sports offers online registration for returning captains.

Rec Sports offers volunteer opportunities within the department too.

“Students can volunteer in events, game management, running games at night, scheduling, taking pictures, shooting video footage, and designing posters,” said Davis.”

Students interested in helping the Rec Sports department can stop by the office in Hart 227 or find contact information at activities.byui.edu/sports. □
