The family that plays together stays together

Basketball at BYU‑Idaho has a new dynamic duo. One half dominates on the boards, overpowering opponents with size. The other half plays a precision game, focusing on perfect passes and shots.

Brain and brawn could rule the court if given the opportunity, but unless competitive basketball starts a co-ed team, they can’t.

Adina Call, a sophomore from Auburn, Wash., makes up half that duo. She coached and played basketball last year, but chose to just play this year. Adina suits up with the Spartans.

Bryan Call, a junior from Pocatello, Idaho, makes up the other half. Bryan, better known as Chewy, married Adina nine months ago. He’ll be the first to tell you things have changed since then.

This is my first year playing basketball, Chewy said. I’ve always played the weird sports. I took second at nationals in arm-wrestling, and I was the first guy to do a back-flip on a pogo stick.

He said he started playing ball after Adina beat him at the shoot-around game, H-O-R-S-E. He didn’t want to be humiliated by his wife anymore, so he set out to improve his game by playing competitive ball with the Wildcats.

We’re both pretty dang competitive, Chewy said.

That competitive edge shows up on and off the court.

We’re competitive in everything, Adina said. Whether it’s sports or board games, we both hate to lose.

Winning or losing, the Calls have a lot to look forward to on and off the court.

I think our best sports memory is yet to come, Chewy said. □
