Chris Carson, BYU-Idaho graduate and College of Business and Communication faculty member, played on the Vikings competitive soccer team this semester.
Many students take advantage of the Athletics program, but this year the soccer program had a faculty member participating

Chris Carson graduated from BYU-Idaho in April 2006 and is the supervisor of Career and Academic Advising for the College of Business and Communication.

“I am interested in athletics because I love sports and competition, but recently it has been a good way to keep myself fit and happy. Not to mention, physical exercise tends to help me manage stress,” Carson said.

Carson enjoys many sports including football, ultimate frisbee, basketball and baseball, and he has been playing soccer since he was 6 years old.

Carson played for the Vikings this fall in the competitive soccer league and although he is no longer a student, he still feels like one of the guys.

“Since I am not obviously older than anyone else on the field, when I am playing I do not think it is all that weird, at least not for me. I hope no one else feels too uncomfortable,” Carson said.

The soccer program had eight teams this season, which allows for more flexibility for the students to find a way to participate.

Teams practiced in the afternoon and early evening, allowing coaches to pick players that were available when they would be holding practices.

“Since most games and practices are late afternoon, I usually don’t have a problem making time to play. My wife is supportive of the fact that I like to play and so she helps me make time. When there are commitment conflicts I simply have to look at my priorities and make the best judgment call that I can,” Carson said.

Carson is cordial in the office, but it’s all business on the field where he plays forward and helped the Vikings to a fourth place finish after the regular season.
