BYU-I sports soccer showdown

Paul Dille, a junior from Nampa, Idaho, and the captain of the Zebras, led his team to a victory in the RecSports champioship game Oct. 26 (pictured) and the game against an all-star
competitive team Nov. 2.
In a game of exhibition play, the Zebras beat the Competitive All-stars by a score of 1-0 at BYU-Idaho Stadium on Nov. 2.

The Zebras, the RecSports Viking league champions, scored the game’s only goal late in the second half when Ryun Payne, a sophomore from Rexburg, knocked one in.

Payne had scored a goal previously, but because of a requirement that necessitated at least four girls on the field, the goal was taken away.

“We’re just here to have fun,” said Paul Dille, a junior from Nampa, Idaho, and the captain of the Zebras. “We didn’t care what the score was at the end.”

It was one of the first times that the wall between RecSports and Competitive athletics was brought down for an exhibition.

“It was a competitive sports idea,” said Dave Mitchell, a senior from Rexburg and Competitive sports volunteer. “We thought it would be a fun idea to get some of the RecSports and Competitive players together.”

“[Mitchell] just came to our championship game and told us whoever won could come play [the exhibition] game,” Dille said. “It was pretty exciting. We were all kind of stoked for it.”

Mitchell said that if they ever do it again, they would mix up the teams, creating a more fun and less competitive atmosphere.

As exciting as the game was for the Zebras, nothing compared to the RecSports championship.

“I had never won one; I have always been on bad teams,” Dille said. “We were more stoked about winning (the RecSports) championship and getting the T-shirt.”
