Korean students find different and authentic ways to eat

Imagine instead of having bread or potatoes with the meals you make, having spicy pickled vegetables instead. There are specific foods in Korea the people try to make every time they sit down to eat a meal.

In Korea, every meal we try to eat kimchi with rice and a lot of vegetables, said Chris Kim, a junior from Seoul, South Korea.

Kimchi is a dish that consists of spicy pickled vegetables, most commonly cabbage. However, to make the kimchi dish, Koreans change the vegetables to give different variations to the recipe.

Other major ingredients for Korean dishes include sesame oil, red peppers, garlic and vegetables. Hui won Kuk, a freshman also from Seoul, South Korea, said that her favorite dish is bibimpap. Bibimpap is a rice dish with pepper paste and a lot of vegetables. Kuk said that not only is the dish delicious, but there are also many health benefits to bibimpap.

Bibimpap is a simple recipe most girls eat at night. In Korea, they really care about their body being slim. It’s really hard. So at midnight, we make bibimpap, Kuk said.

The reason bibimpap is so popular as a midnight snack is because there is a famous drama in Korea called Samsuni. According to Kuk, the actress eats bibimpap at midnight in order to help her stay thin. Kuk says that Samsuni has been watched by almost all Koreans.

Kuk believes that because movies and television greatly affect perceptions on life, when Koreans watch Samsuni, they too desire to eat bibimpap at midnight.

Many Koreans in America try to maintain their healthy eating and lifestyle habits. However, this can be hard.

There are no stores to buy kimchi, so I eat pizza and hamburgers instead, Kim said.

Even though there are no stores in Rexburg to buy Korean food, there are other towns that do have stores with Korean food sections in them.

Kim pointed out that it is easier to find Korean items in Idaho Falls. He specifically mentioned that WinCo has a small selection.

Although some may go to Idaho Falls and other towns to get Korean foods, Kuk said she, like many Koreans, bring ingredients with her from home and when they run out, they try to get their family and friends to ship some more to them. □
