Hating on the Haters

Nothing bothers me more than disrespect for others’ beliefs — nothing, except people who have irrelevant reasons for disrespecting others’ beliefs.

I call these people haters. Like my friend that won’t eat custard because it rhymes with mustard, or those people who hate the Jazz because they’re from Utah, haters rationalize the fact that they have no reason to hate but hate itself.

The other day, I was in the Manwaring Center trying to avoid eye contact with all of the salesmen, when a lumbering, hairy elephant, blocked my escape until I accepted a flier for the College Republicans.

While the shocking costume already cast doubt on the credibility of Mr. Elephant’s flier, the content of the handout destroyed the rest of it. It had a sexy photo of Ann Coulter next to a frightening shot of Hillary Clinton, with a caption saying, “Republicans are just hotter!”

I flashed back to a similar situation in my LDS mission when a man in a less shocking outfit handed me a flier that said, “Mormons grow horns.” Ridiculous.

Just like this anti-Mormon gentleman, Mr. Elephant lost all plausibility for his cause by confusing the issue and implying that I should not associate with a certain group for a highly irrelevant reason.

Can you say hater?

By the way, Hillary used to be a Republican, so if the flier is true, she must have instantly become not-hot when she switched over. Bummer.

In a real campaign, a career in politics would be over after this flier’s release. I hope for the College Republicans’ sake, the Democratic Party never sees it.

I have yet to hear a BYU-Idaho College Republican say one thing about a relevant issue. I would actually stop and listen to one if I felt like they had a good reason to be a Republican other than that their parents were or because they think Hillary is ugly. Up to this point, the advertising hasn’t given me that impression.

If you have a good point, make it. Don’t make your cause look stupid by coming off as a hater. Hating Democrats is not a good reason to be Republican anyway.

Being the majority on this campus does not mean that 1) Republicans are right, or 2) they have the right to persecute political minorities, either in the form of abusive and irrelevant campaigning or verbal oppression.

Being the minority in the world does not mean that 1) LDS Church members are wrong, or 2) people have the right to persecute them either. No one has this right, and like I said, the only thing worse than hate is ignorant hate.

What I’m trying say is you need to try the custard. It’s good. □
