| It’s a popular craze in stalker technology: BYU-Idaho’s student directory. Know their name, find their address, get their phone number and so much more.
Until recently, I never really understood why the directory was called “Stalker Net.”
I had never been contacted by anyone who had used the directory to find me, and I had never used it against anyone, either.
But then I got the e-mail. It was regarding a previous article of mine, and not at all creepy, except that I knew the only way this person could have found my e-mail address was through the directory. That was a little disturbing.
A lot of my personal information is at the fingertips of any person at any time. You don’t even need a student log-in to view the directory.
That means that anyone who knows even my first name and hometown can look me up and e-mail me.
I do realize the usefulness of this tool; being able to contact classmates for missed assignments is very valuable. But surfing the student directory for hot girls/boys?
That could come off as a little desperate.
How many girls are going to accept a date with someone who shopped through I-Card photos and e-mailed the prettiest one?
Some people get really creeped out.
Random e-mails from people met in passing or not met at all are not generally well received.
So just a little warning to all those scouting for dates on the student directory: Stalker Net is not the answer.
Try the library, instead.
