At one a.m., Nov. 23, more than 10,000 people rushed into Boise Towne Square Mall. Some had been waiting outside the doors since 7 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, others had arrived just minutes before the night, labeled “Rockin’ Shoppin’ Eve,” began.
When mall officials opened the doors, the scene was horrific — doors were broken and the police and paramedics called.
What a season to be jolly.
I am glad to say I was not one of them. Instead, I watched the local news station interviewing people about what had drawn them there — rumors of free Nintendo Wiis and $500 gift cards. One of each was given away.
When I arrived several hours later, mall officials were still cleaning up the mess. Trash overflowed cans, racks were dismantled in stores and sales people were exhausted.
People in my hometown of Boise do not act like this! People are friendly and good natured.
Must we forget the Spirit of Christmas so quickly? Is a $25 discount on an i-pod so important that we must spend and entire day in the cold, forgetting what we are thankful for and only remembering what we wish we had?
This country is blessed with so much, yet we forget it every day.
Let us remember the abundance we do have this month and spread a little Christmas joy.
