BYU-I alumna plays on Mitt’s team

Many supporters and volunteers work behind the scenes on Mitt Romney’s campaign to become the president in 2008. One of the supporters working on Romney’s election campaign is BYU-Idaho graduate Shandi Hill, from Bangs, Texas.

The number of volunteer fundraisers participating is more than 600, according to a June 25 press release from the Mitt Romney Campaign.

With many volunteers it is Hill’s job to organize some of those volunteers.

“I know that I am helping a great candidate who will make a great president,” Hill said.

Hill’s personal goal with her work in Romney’s campaign is to “make sure volunteers are meeting goals and are happy,” Hill said.

Hill’s other responsibility is to gather supporters to rally and receive donations. Hill did just that when Romney visited Idaho Falls June 23.

Supporters’ donations are important to candidates’ campaigns. March 2007 numbers showed that Romney earned 89 percent of his 2008 campaign funds by individual contributions, totalling $20,841,938, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Making calls and sending e-mails is one way to get donations, Hill said.

The work Hill does for Romney’s campaign reflects her support for Romney as president.

“[Mitt Romney] is patriotic. I like that he’s not extremely conservative. He’ll bring our country together. I admire his ability to look at a problem and fix it,” Hill said.

Working on Romney’s campaign isn’t Hill’s first time assisting a candidate. Working with Idaho congressman Mike Simpson in 2005 was part of her internship.

Hill graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in political science. She was involved with the BYU-I College Republicans and served internships that contributed to her landing the position she is in now, Hill said.

Internships and extracurricular activities weren’t the only things that prepared Hill for working on Romney’s campaign.

“The teachers [at BYU-I] are well rounded …and allowed me to expand my knowledge,”  □
