As Mitt Romney walked into the Melaleuca airport hanger June 22 in Idaho Falls, a crowd cheered, “Go Mitt, go!” as the Republican presidential candidate picked up a baby and held the child aloft while U2’s “Beautiful Day” played in the background.
The rally brought a crowd of 400, comprised of students, Idaho residents and one lone protestor.
Romey spoke for 10 minutes, driving home the importance of the real strength in the community.
“We have a strong economy. We believe in strong families, and we know that there is no greater work than the one that goes on between the four walls of the home,” Romney said.
Speaking of families, Romney’s own wife wasn’t too sure of his political potential when the couple was first dating.
“Sweetheart, in your wildest dreams would you ever see me running for president?” Romney asked. In turn, his wife said, “Honey, you were never in my wildest dreams.”
Romney said that he thought his dad, Michigan governor George Romney, “lost his senses” when he got into politics, but after recently assessing the nation’s status, Romney concluded that he should follow suit and strive for betterment.
In 2002, Romney said, “The Olympics are broken; Massachusetts is broken; our country is broken; Washington is broken.”
With each broken project he undertakes, Romney strives to better the situation.
In response to a student’s question, Romney said students can get involved by looking at his Web site, mittromney.com.
Jason Cane, a senior from Springfield, Mo., joined Romney’s enthusiasm. “I love Mitt. He’s gonna make it. When I shook his hand, I told him that he was going to be the next Ronald Reagan. He looked back out of the corner of his eye and said, ‘Thank you.’ It was awesome.”
Romney stayed at the rally after his speech to walk through the crowd and shake as many hands as he could, thanking everyone for coming.
“It’s the best day of my life,” said Chris Harris, a Melaleuca manager from Idaho Falls.
With smiles all around, Romney reminded everyone that the family is the building block of America. “With that message, I’m gonna win November,” Romney said.
