Rexburg will become home to the first commercial WiMAX network in the country. The high-speed wireless internet service, created by Virginia-based DigitalBridge Communications (DBC), will initially reach 7,000 homes and businesses across the city.
The digital WiMAX network (selling under the name BridgeMAXX) uses radio frequencies, as opposed to traditional cables, telephone wires or satellite dishes, to provide service. Customers can access the service using a small, portable modem that connects to their computers.
Because WiMAX operates on radio waves, subscribers can access the Internet anywhere in the service area by carrying their modem with them. The service also features “plug-and-surf technology,” which allows customers to set up and begin using the Internet connection in just a few minutes.
The inaugural ceremony, held at the Rexburg water tower, celebrated the launch of the WiMAX service. Mayor Shawn Larson spoke at the “wire-cutting” ceremony. “We are delighted to work with DigitalBridge Communications as the site of its first WiMAX launch in the country,” Larsen said.
This WiMAX technology endeavor will allow Rexburg to grow and provide more educational and economic opportunities to our citizens,” Larsen said.
By launching its BridgeMAXX service in Rexburg, DBC hopes not only to promote its product but to benefit the community as well.
“Using WiMAX, we are able to offer high-speed Internet service where it wasn’t available before or as an alternative to DSL or cable,” said Kelley Dunne, CEO of DBC.
The Rexburg City Animal Shelter, previously unable to receive high-speed Internet, was among the first recipients of the BridgeMAXX service. Customers can sign up over the phone, online or at Computer Medical Center in Rexburg.
