Road crews started work on a new project off of University Boulevard on May 10 that will re-route traffic heading towards the BYU-Idaho campus. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) said that a new road will link BYU-Idaho to the U.S. 20 from the extension of University Boulevard (Exit 332).
This addition to University Boulevard will extend 1.7 miles through farmland to connect to the intersection of Second West and Seventh South in Rexburg. Rexburg officials expect the new route to accommodate people from both north and south of town.
When told about the construction, which will create a major street close to the temple, Daniel Kennedy, a junior from Portland, Ore., said, “It will expose the school to a lot more people from Southeast Idaho; I think it’s a great thing.”
This new street hasn’t just materialized this year. “The city has planned the road for 30 years,” said Public Works director John Millar.
Residents can expect a two-lane street, which will eventually turn into a five-lane arterial. The entire project will cost $4.8 million. Rexburg is going to pay $1.07 million of the sum total.
Students and residents can expect work to be conducted on-site Monday through Friday with minimal to no affects on daily traffic flow. Estimated finish time of the project is set for October 31 of this year.
