Former student sentenced for theft
|
| Former BYU-Idaho student Courtney Eagleston pleaded guilty to one felony count of burglary and one felony count of grand theft Nov. 20, in connection with a July theft of firearms and other items from a Rexburg pawn shop.
Eagleston was sentenced to serve 180 days in Madison County Jail. A judge will decide between subsequent probation for five years or two years in prison, according to KPVI news. Eagleston was arrested in July for theft of firearms, firearm magazines and other items from B & B Gun and Pawn in Rexburg. The items carried a total value of over $20,000, according to news reports. Eagleston, from Naples, Fla., was arrested in Salt Lake City after being stopped for suspicious driving, according to earlier Scroll reports. Police reported they found over 20 guns and crack cocaine in the car. Another arrest came later in connection with the burglary from B&B Gun and Pawn. Deseret Morning News reported a total of 42 guns and a cash register stolen by Eagleston. Some of the items were found in various locations around his apartment complex in Rexburg. Since the growth spurt in Rexburg connected to BYU-I’s change to a four-year university, Capt. Randy Lewis of Rexburg police said crime has become more prevalent and more serious. Eagleston is one of several students criminally charged last summer alone. |
