UNITED NATIONS (AP) Primary school enrollments increased significantly in much of the developing world from 1999 to 2004, but 77 million young children are still not attending school, according to a new U.N. report.
The report by the U.N. Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization said more children are registering for school, but the world enrollment of 86 percent falls short of the U.N. goal of universal basic education by 2015.
The “Education for All Global Monitoring Report” found that enrollments grew by 27 percent in sub-Saharan Africa in the five-year period studied and by 19 percent in south and west Asia. Arab states grew 6 percent.
