The price of a gallon of gas has dropped considerably across the nation, with the exception of the northwest.
This Monday, large metropolitan cities like Baltimore and Boston are citing gas prices at $1.95 and $2.25, respectively, while prices in the heart of Rexburg are hovering around $2.46 (Tesoro) per gallon.
If there is a reason for the sudden drop, no agency or group is taking credit. This summer as gas prices reached their peak, angered consumers looked to any source for an explanation. Many blamed political agendas, a collapsing economy or greedy oil company CEO’s as the reason for the past $3-per-gallon spike.
Oil refineries in Utah account for the northwest’s relatively isolated market. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, these refineries pump crude oil from Canada, Colorado and Wyoming. This is helpful when production in large supply areas like the Gulf Coast or California is disrupted, but hurtful when there is an excess of crude oil and gasoline.
In Rexburg, the stinging effects of high gas prices have been dampened but still affect daily habits, especially for BYU-Idaho students.
“When I drove down from the [upper] soccer fields, I would put my car in neutral and coast down the hill, ” said Sunny June Day, a sophomore from Post Falls, Idaho, about her gas saving techniques.
