Home and Garden Bridal Show planned for Mar. 22

Get out the tiaras and the trowels; the Home and Garden Bridal Show is coming to the BYU-Idaho campus with gardening and bridal workshops on March 22.

Horticulture students have been working all semester to prepare for this event, which includes gardening, flowers and wedding gowns. There will also be a brunch and several workshops available.

The brunch will include food and tips on wedding etiquette. Garden workshops will include tips on relieving stress. They also teach how to make a salsa garden, prepare soil, arrange flowers, and a make an herb container garden.

The bridal workshops will include wedding gowns and dresses and wedding reception set-ups, said Ashley Akin, coordinator of the event.

Every year the horticulture department puts on a bridal show, usually associated with Mother’s Weekend and aimed at students, said Crystal Lyman, a senior studying horticulture.

“This year we wanted to expand it to involve community members,” Lyman said. “The Social Activities department helped us figure out how to make it work.”

Horticulture students like Lyman earn credits for planning and running the show. Many students will teach workshops about different things to do with flowers.

“Girls can learn what to do when [their] boyfriend brings [them] flowers instead of just putting them in a vase,” Lyman said.

People can also expect to see the latest trends in weddings and gather new ideas.

“Some people might not like [some of the trends] because they’re from Europe and they’re just not our style,” Lyman said.

However, Lyman encourages people who aren’t engaged or married to attend, even men.

“It’s really relaxing. I always say that horticulture students are the happiest students on campus. It’s so healthy because we’re always around plants and flowers. They are what God created for us.” Lyman said. The show itself may be able to give students and community members a taste of the atmosphere that horticulture students are around all the time.

“It’s like another world when we get the show all done,” Lyman said. “It’s a lot of fun, and a lot of work. We do it for you, we do it for the students, we do it for the community.”

Though materials are not available for purchase, a three dollar charge covers the cost of materials that will be obtained during the workshops. A DVD documenting the show is also available to be ordered at the end of the show.

The event will start with a brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  □
