Khakis + shirt + shoes = comfortable, casual business dress

Many people wear jeans every day. So why has President Kim B. Clark asked BYU-Idaho students to not wear jeans on campus?

“There are two reasons why what you wear to class is important.

“First, like being on time, it is a sign of your respect for the process of learning and teaching that occurs in those dedicated places.

“Second, what people wear affects how they and those around them behave. Simply said, your dress will affect how you and your classmates engage in the learning process and how much you learn,” said President Clark in the opening devotional of the Fall 2006 semester.

“The way you dress is a reflection of what you are on the inside. Your dress and grooming send messages about you to others and influence the way you and others act,” according to the For Strength of the Youth pamphlet.

Hats and caps are not to be worn inside campus buildings, according to the “baseline” of the Honor Code. This applies to both men and women and might be in place to promote a more professional look for class.

There might be students that would rather go to Provo where the standard is more relaxed.

There are no specifications to deny fraying or torn jeans in the BYU Dress and Grooming Standards, and there are fewer requirements of professional dress, according to www.byu.edu.

Harvard University has no requirements for dress on their Web site, www.harvard.edu.

BYU-Idaho has a dress standard, and the university president said he expects more.

“When you receive a prompting to raise the personal bar, listen very carefully to the Spirit and the Lord will show you how acting on that prompting will help you bless those around you,” President Clark said. □
