Class, clean, test, clean, class...

White glove

A tower of dirty dishes tilts precariously in the sink while socks, books and food lie scattered about the front room. And what is that smell?

The end of the semester approaches without an official finals week, which was when most students completed white glove during their larger breaks between tests. This semester, many classes have homework until Friday, leaving some students worried about when they will have time to clean.

“We encourage tenants to clean a little bit at a time, so they don’t get overwhelmed at the end of the year,” said Chelsie Plaster, a manager at The Nauvoo House.

With actual class periods replacing the previous finals week, delegation is key to passing white glove.

Courtney Guth, a sophomore studying English education, and her roommates decided to rotate jobs and help each other. Confident in her system, Guth said her apartment will be able to finish on time.

Some students seem less confident.

“It’s so dirty,” said Samuel Brubaker, a freshmen studying communication. “I wish clean checks would happen more often, so my apartment would stay clean.”

Failure to complete end-of-semester white glove results in deduction from tenants’ deposit.

“Depending on how bad things are, we send in a cleaning crew and have tenants pay for their hours,” Plaster said.

Some apartment complexes offer rewards for tenants who excel at clean checks or white glove. Both The Nauvoo House and Snow View Apartments offer a free pizza party to the cleanest apartments. □
