It’s past time to grow up

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round, the wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town!”

This little song may be cute when it is coming from your 5-year-old nephew or niece. It may even be hilarious coming from your friends high on sugar — but it is not cute when your roommate sings it every single day just because she likes it.

It is not cute when your roommate speaks in incoherent baby talk all the time, runs around like a hyper 7-year-old, or calls her parents for every minute problem that most people her age are more than capable of handling.

Now, everyone has these moments once in a while. I understand that, and I am not saying that these behaviors should be banned. They just should not be done more than spontaneously, especially after one outgrows the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles underpants.

I know a perfect example. She is a beautiful, smart and funny 19-year-old, but she still acts like she is nine. She still thinks boys are icky. She goes to her parents for answers that she should know herself: how to wash a new water bottle, which classes she should take, what she should buy from the grocery store and how to get egg out of a shirt.

It is fine to be silly and ask parents for help once in a while, there are always going to be times it is good to go to someone older and wiser for help, but college students need to become more independent and responsible.

It’s time to focus on getting married and raising families, going to graduate school, going on missions, as well as finishing education and getting careers.

If one hasn’t grown up by now, before long, he or she will be 30 and still living with in the parents’ basement. It is time to grasp the maturity and independence college asks of us.

Please, for the sake of those around you — grow up.  □
