In the first session of general conference, Elder Henry B. Eyring was called to serve as second counselor in the First Presidency, taking the position left vacant by the death of President James E. Faust, who had served for 12 years. Elder Quentin L. Cook was called to serve in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
“My main feeling is gratitude that the Lord would have trust that I would have this opportunity to serve,” Eyring said in a news conference Saturday afternoon. “An opportunity to serve with people I love and whom I sustain as prophets, seers and revelators.”
President Eyring described the phone call from President Hinckley Thursday evening as very personal and enduring. “He asked if I would be willing to join President Monson and him in the First Presidency,” Eyring said. He went on to say the call was so marvelous, he was willing to do anything asked.
President Eyring is the 24 man to serve in the calling of second couselor in the First Presidency since the Restoration. Elder Cook is the 95th man called as an apostle.
Before this call, Elder Cook helped oversee the worldwide missionary program.
“I pray I’ll be able to serve with distinction in this new calling,” Cook said.
Also called were Elder Claudio R.M. Costa, Elder Steven E. Snow and Elder Walter F. Gonzalez as members of the presidency of the Seventy.
