A housing forum for university-approved housing was held on March 26. A new contract for student housing was discussed. Afterwards, attendees gave recommendations for the BYU-Idaho administration to improve student housing in Rexburg.
“The purpose of the housing forum was to inform students about the new housing contract … and also to receive input on that contract,” said Niel Campbell, a sophomore studying computer engineering. Campbell was representing the SRC at the forum.
The contract was reviewed and approved by BYU-I administration and local housing managers. It was drafted by Sharon Tuckett, the BYU-I housing director. Tuckett was the guest speaker at the forum, and she explained the standards of approved housing, rent prices and housing maintenance.
Then, time for questions and concerns was allotted.
Some concerns the students mentioned included the following: single-student-housing prices are higher than those for married-student housing; there is sometimes a lack of clarity concerning fees and deposits; students sometimes have a hard time finding access to their apartment owners; and prices for student housing are on the rise.
Campbell explained that the comments and concerns of the students would be reported to councils and committees on campus, where BYU-I administration and employees will hear what changes they need to make to benefit the students.
“Anytime there are ideas expressed from the students to the administration, there is progress made,” Campbell said.
