SRC talks student insurance

The Student Representative Council hosted a forum dedicated to answering students’ questions about BYU-Idaho’s student health plan on Wednesday, February 27.

Stephanie Barclay, SRC Vice President, said she felt the forum

went well. “Students were able to learn more about insurance, ask questions and make suggestions for how things could be better,” Barclay said.

Student Health Plan Administrator Aaron Larson presented a slide show defining basic insurance terminology, introduced Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators, and explained the importance of being insured.

Jessica Smedley, a senior studying health science and the SRC married student representative, said that there are “a lot more positive feelings now that students are getting a better idea of what insurance is about.”

The forum’s key topics included the raise in the catastrophic limit for married students back in January — from $120,000 to $1,000,000 annually — and the different types of coverage available.

“Brother Larson showed a chart comparing ISU, BSU, USU, U of U and BYU-Provo. BYU-Idaho’s insurance premium is lower than all of them,” Smedley said. Brother Larson is open to questions.

“[He] really wants to help students, answer questions and clarify,” Smedley said. Larson can be contacted through the Insurance Office in the Kimball. □
