An IBC (integrated business core) group is doing a parody of a Seinfeld episode “The Muffin Tops” by creating a company called Top of the Muffin to You.
IBC is a four-class core designed to help business-management students see first-hand what it is like to run a business. Groups are formed within the classes, and each one comes up with its own company to run on campus. One group decided to use the hit television show Seinfeld as its inspiration for its company.
Fans of the show may recall that in the episode, only the tops of muffins were sold. This IBC group is selling entire muffins, pretzels and hot chocolate, but still using the name as part of its gimmick.
Seinfeld isn’t the only comedy show inspiring this IBC group. Late-night shows such as Late Night with Conan O’Brien also played muse to the group. Top of the Muffin to You is hosting a live, comedy-hour talk-show performance. The show, being held four times this semester, stars student John Merrifield as host and features a variety of guests throughout the semester.
The first show, held Oct. 27 in the Kirkham Auditorium, featured various guests and lasted about an hour. Group member Joe Scalese, a senior studying business management, was pleased with the success of the show.
“I was blown away at how good it turned out,” Scalese said. “It was up and alive at Rexburg Live.”
Ryan Cauffman, chief marketing operator for the group and a junior studying business management, anticipates an even bigger turnout for the next shows.
“We’ve got great guests and great bands. It should be an awesome night,” Cauffman said.
The next shows are scheduled for Nov. 14, Dec. 1 and Dec. 8 and will be held in the Kirkham Auditorium at 7 p.m.
Tickets are sold at the Ticket Office for $5 and at muffin stands around campus for $4.
Stands can be found at both the Joseph Fielding Smith and Thomas E. Ricks buildings and soon in vendors all over campus.
