Tying up her laces and stepping out on to the floor of the Manwaring Center Ballroom, Courtney Guth is ready for another great night of swing dancing. Guth, a sophomore studying English education, is a second-year member of the swing team.
“I have been dancing since I could walk, and by high school I realized how fun and exciting swing dancing is,” Guth said.
Naturally, Guth was overjoyed when she found out that BYU-Idaho not only has a competitive swing team, but swing dancing nights every Wednesday.
“I love swing nights,” Guth said. “It’s a great outlet to get away from all of the stress of homework and school.”
The night starts out with a lesson at 7 p.m. Dancers can learn the basics of swing or go to the intermediate class to learn more complex steps. The lessons are taught by members of the Swing Society, a group of people who plan each week’s activity. It is only $1 with an I-card to get in, which allows access to both the swing and country dancing rooms.
The open swing dance begins at 8 p.m. Some Wednesdays, the swing team performs for everyone in attendance.
“It’s really a cool place to hang out and meet new people,” said Jared Mackley, a freshman studying communication who also enjoys the swing dancing nights.
Everyone in attendance is encouraged to ask a lot of people to dance to mix it up. This almost ensures everyone will get a chance to dance.
“It’s great because you don’t have to be a dancer to come,” Guth said. “Anyone can come, learn the steps and have fun.”
