Conference to address importance of family

Twenty years ago, BYU-Idaho hosted a conference focusing on the home and family; that conference has returned this fall. BYU-I will host the Home and Family Conference, “Get a Life: Skills for Better Living,” on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The conference is co-sponsored by the BYU-I Division of Continuing Education and the Department of Home and Family. Both Elder Ronald J. Hammond, an Area Seventy, and H. Wallace Goddard, Ph.D, will be speaking on “Home as a Sacred Center of our Lives” and “Compassion in Family Life,” respectively.

Joseph Leo Anderson, a senior studying social work who serves as student body vice-president, is an advocate for this conference and member of the conference committee.

“A teacher in high school once asked, ‘What does the world need most out of everything,’” Anderson said. “The answer was, ‘wise mothers and exemplary fathers,’ and that is what this conference is trying to build.”

Anderson and other members of the conference committee hope that coming to the conference will prepare attendees to handle situations that being a parent may bring. There is a push for students to know about home and family, because many students are preparing for marriage and building a family.

“It’s never too early to prepare,” Anderson said.

The conference will include speakers, a luncheon, a humanitarian project and a share fair. Community members, alumni and students are invited.

Male students are highly encouraged to get involved, because being a good father is just as important as being a good mother.

“It’s very easy nowadays to skip the small things in raising children,” Anderson said. “We hope that this conference will provide an opportunity for future and [current] parents to remember the small things and prepare for them.”
