If one witnessed the procession of torch-bearing students marching near campus on the night of Oct. 11, they wouldn’t have needed to inform the fire department. It was just BYU-Idaho students taking part in the first-ever Spirit Trek as part of Spirit Week.
The trek began at 6:30 p.m. in the John Taylor Building, where students were assigned a group and given a pencil and notpad for notetaking.
The groups were lead by Student Spirit Events leaders who taught and led discussions in the Thomas E. Ricks Gardens about five principles for the mission of BYU-I, including Spirit of Ricks, Student Honor, Inspired Learning and Teaching, Disciple Preparation, and Leadership Development.
“We wanted students to come and get a better understanding of what President Clark calls the ‘enduring characteristics’ of the university,” said Alan Jones, Student Spirit Events adviser.
After the discussions, students sang hymns as they walked past the temple to the adjacent stake center for a presentation on gratitude based on a devotional by Elder David A. Bednar.
The evening ended with hot apple cider and cobbler by the nearly-finished Rexburg Temple.
The goal of the event was to give students a better understanding of the mission and spirit that they can be a part of at the university.
“I think if students walked away having felt the spirit and recognizing what a blessing it is to be here at BYU-Idaho, then I feel like we accomplished something,” said Brittany Groom, a junior studying communication and Student Spirit Events board member.
