A rapidly changing industry has made necessary the birth of a new creation in the Communication Department. i-Comm, a convergence of student-led media groups, is a way for students from many academic majors to use their skills in practical and professionally modeled ways.

Currently, i-Comm consists of students from 12-15 different majors outside of the Communication Department.

“The media industry doesn’t just employ Communication majors. That’s why we don’t care what their majors are. If a student shows talent in their particular field of expertise we probably have an outlet here for them at i-Comm,” said Lee Warnick, i-Comm adviser.

Prior to i-Comm, the Communication Department had a variety of student practicums, like: i-News, a news television broadcasting group; and Rixida, the University yearbook.

Scroll newspaper was also one of these practicums. However, Scroll consisted of more than just writers. It had designers, photographers, a public relations section and an advertising group.

These different skill groups were exclusive to Scroll and provided obvious advantages to Scroll that the other practicums did not have.

“The i-Comm convergence allows us to increase the overall breadth and size of our practicums. It allows us to tackle multiple projects using pooled resources and it’s a great opportunity for students from different backgrounds to grow their skills,” said John Thompson, i-Comm general manager.

i-Comm now consists of many organizations, each working together to produce projects: Alloy, the advertising and public relations organization; Genesis, the i-Comm design and photo team; Synergy, the sales organization; Scroll; Rixida and i-News.

Students who are preparing to go on internships are encouraged to prepare by joining an i-Comm organization.

“We want students from other disciplines to come because they have what we need,” Thompson said. i-Comm will prepare students by allowing them to do similar kinds of professional work that they’ll be expected to do during their internships. □
