Outside the classroom

Mike Cannon

Sayings like, Thou shalt not whine, and Never give up, are posted on the walls in his office accompanied by pictures of temples and plaques of recognition. This gives an idea of the optimism and enthusiasm for success that professor Mike Cannon has for life.

Cannon has been a professor at BYU‑Idaho for four-and-a-half years. He attended Southern Utah University and received a Bachelor’s degree in general communications. He then went on to earn a Master’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Oregon. After his completion of school, he worked for the Deseret Morning News editorial department and was also involved with the LDS Church News.

Cannon teaches in the Communication Department at BYU‑I, principally dealing with Public Relations.

I fell in love with teaching on my first mission, and have always had that in the back of my mind as something that I wanted to do, Cannon said.

While serving as a Mission President in Kentucky, Cannon was hired to work at BYU‑I. He came to the university after being released.

It has been a great privilege to be here at BYU‑Idaho, Cannon said. I love everything about it. It is large enough to provide great opportunities but small enough to be personable.

Cannon also said that he loves the environment here. He encourages students to jump in. and embrace the opportunities that this campus has to offer. He loves the student-led and student-run organizations. Cannon said he knows that the students here have great potential and encourages them to raise the bar. □
