| For students at BYU-Idaho, a career or an internship is in the mind set as students search for ways to standout to future employers.
Learning proper etiquette might be one of the keys of reaching that “perfect” job or internship.
Christal Collette, a junior from Essex Junction, Vt., understands how important etiquette is when at a business dinner, or even just at a social event.
Collette was in charge of the etiquette dinner that took place on Saturday, Oct. 28. She organized the dinner and asked Andrea Reynolds, a junior from Rexburg, to come and teach participants proper dinner etiquette.
Reynolds said it is important to know the rules of society so that you can feel comfortable in situations such as a business dinners, meeting with clients, or meeting future in-laws.
Those rules of society were taught Saturday night.
Diners learned how to eat properly, social rules of etiquette and how to escort a lady.
Trent Buehler, a senior from Malad, Idaho, explained that Reynolds taught them the “three in one” way to eat hors d’oeuvres, this method of eating allows you to have one free hand to meet and greet people.
Buehler said that you put three fingers on the bottom of your plate along with your napkin, pull the napkin out from the bottom of the plate just enough so you can use it to wipe, then put your glass on the top of your plate next to the hors d’oeuvres holding it with your finger and thumb.
“I have learned a handful of things that they just do not teach in Malad,” Buehler said.
Buehler wasn’t the only one who learned things he would not have learned somewhere else. Nick Gubler, a senior from Marysville, Wash., also learned a lot from the dinner.
“Its amazing to see how little you know about something as daily as eating in a formal setting,” Gubler said.
To make it seem official, the room was decorated with maroon sheer material and an arch that went by the door way.
To set the elegant mood there was a harp player in the corner.
The menu included a complete course. To begin, Caesar salad was served, followed by a main entrée of roast turkey, herb roasted red potatoes, green beans almandine and a butter flake roll. And for dessert: raspberry cheese cake.
The dinner took place in MC 272 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The students who went to the etiquette dinner agreed that etiquette is important and the dinner helped them learn the basics.
