‘Princess Bride’ gets a BYU-I makeover

Mention The Princess Bride in any BYU-Idaho apartment, and cries of “twoo love” and “inconceivable” will most likely ring in the air, paired with fits of laughter and rolling eyes.

There’s no telling what may ensue when the classic cult film becomes the BYU-I-themed theatrical adaptation As You Wish, written and directed by Megan Miller, a senior studying history education.

Miller and her sister Ashley, a junior studying communication, came up with the idea to adapt The Princess Bride after an intense brainstorming session a week before classes started this semester. They said it seemed to be an idea that could easily be tailored to a BYU-I themed story.

“We tried to keep it close to the original themes of the The Princess Bride.” Miller said. “What we tried to stay true to were some of the characters.”

And there are beloved The Princess Bride characters a plenty. The evil Prince Humperdinck has been transformed into Humphrey, an overly strict RA; Westley is a newly returned missionary; and Princess Buttercup is Beverly, the girl both young men want to date.

The cast members had plenty of reasons why BYU-I students will enjoy As You Wish, but most of them mentioned how easily students can relate to the realistic and humorous BYU-I story line.

“I think they’ll really enjoy some of the awkward situations. Everybody can appreciate a good awkward situation if they’re not in it,” said Ryan Cooley, a sophomore studying communication and the actor who plays Westley.

As You Wish will run Nov. 13-16 at 7:30 p.m. in the MC Little Theater. All performances are currently sold out, but there will be 30 standby tickets set aside for each night. Tickets are free, and seats will be released at 7:20. □
