BYU-I dancers battle it out

Opening to the song “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” Battle of the Dance performers tore up the Kirkham Auditorium with their talent and energy Friday, Oct. 19.

The show was all about energy and creating an exciting, original show full of variety.

“The performers were so energetic, I had to restrain myself from jumping out of my seat and dancing with them,” said Risto Merril, a freshman studying psychology.

Clogging, ballroom, cabaret, jazz, gymnastic movements and more kept members of the audience on the edges of their seats. From a comic number that clogged the life of a missionary, to a solo cabaret with intricate lifts and smooth drops, each dance number made the audience go wild.

“All the dancers were amazing, and I loved watching them,” said performer Jessica Shenton, a sophomore studying social work.

The comedy, technical numbers, intricate moves and difficult combinations choreographed in each number made Battle of the Dance showed off the dancers’ hard work and talent.

“It was fun practicing with my group, but the most fun part was the actual performance. With the hot lights on my back and the crowd going crazy, everyone’s adrenaline was pumping, and we all were able to make it a good show,” Shenton said.

At the end of Battle of the Dance, each person in the audience checked on a slip of paper their two favorite dances and turned it in. The two dances with the most votes will go on to the Best Of show later this semester. □
