Swing dancing and Friday-night Latin dancing are popular activities that BYU-Idaho offers students.
But for at least two students, Monday-night roller-skating is the most anticipated activity of the week.
Tim Wiseman, a sophomore studying English, and Toby Ricks, a junior studying English, go roller-skating in the Manwaring Center every week.
There are a handful of regulars that the two students notice there, but Wiseman and Ricks are just two of the most dedicated roller-skaters at BYU-I, aside from others who are off-track.
“I’ve been going since fall of 2006, and since then I’ve only missed it twice,” said Wiseman. He said that he went as a freshman with his roommates and thought it was really fun, so he kept going from then on.
“I’ve been skating for a long time, and it’s always fun to go with my family,” Ricks said. He usually skates with his brother or sister when he goes.
Both students said how fun it is to meet new people and skate with old friends. Wiseman even said he’s found a few dates out of this activity.
He said that he often brings his Home Evening group out to roller-skate, and that he couldn’t think of a single person that didn’t like it.
“I like skating with people I know, but it’s always fun towards the end of the night, when there’s not as many people, because it’s easier to do cool tricks and just skate fast,” Wiseman said.
Besides having a good time with friends and family, these roller-skating regulars say that the activity is relaxing.
Combined with the up-beat music and love for roller-skating, the sport has become a favorite pastime for both students.
“When I’m stressed about school and have lots of homework, roller-skating helps me relax, have fun and just forget about all that stuff for a while,” Ricks said.
Whether students want to meet new people or relax and have a good time, Wiseman encourages all students to give roller-skating a try at least once. He said that most people are nervous about falling and being embarrassed, but that it doesn’t matter.
“Everyone should give it a try. A majority of the people will like it,” Wiseman said.
The roller-skating is from 6-10 p.m. every Monday. The cost is $1.75 and includes the skate rentals.
