Stand-up comedy to premiere at BYU-I

Love to laugh? Love to make people laugh? Through unanimous consent from the activities committee, the idea of having stand-up comedy here at BYU has been brought to pass. So Sit Down for Stand Up.

“This show is different from Comic Frenzy. The actors practice and their lines are rehearsed,” said Joseph Michela, a senior studying science and the creator of Sit Down for Stand Up Comedy.

“People who want to audition should come with their material well prepared and with a written copy too,” Michela said.

Auditions will be in the Hyrum Manwaring Student Center room 326 on Oct. 9 from 7-10:30 p.m. The judges will be looking for good material and good performances. For the performance, the material will be Honor-Code-compliant, and the topics will be diverse.

“This is a chance to build your confidence,” said Michela, “anyone who can make someone laugh can do standup.” Michela hopes that if the show goes well they will be able to do the performances a couple times a semester for the next few years.

Michela was inspired by the idea when he went to a performance at BYU and saw “Humor You” perform. Michela decided that he liked what he saw which was students perfecting and learning how to perform comedy.

He decided to suggest the idea to the Activities office. Their vote was unanimous, and now everyone has a chance to audition or come and see this performance.

This event will be taking place in the Manwaring Center on Oct. 27. The doors open at 7:45 PM. Tickets are $5 or $3 with an I-Card □
