BYU-Idaho students and Oreo — what a classic combination

Some sing for their supper, but four BYU-Idaho students and alumni are singing together for $10,000 as one of the top five Oreo jingle contestants.

Contestants all over the country submitted their version of Oreo’s classic jingle in hopes to win the $10,000 grand prize.

BYU-I students Hyrum Denney, a junior from Rexburg, and David Geddes, a senior from Rexburg, and BYU-I alumni Ryan Carroll, from Rexburg, and Shaun Heier, from Kansas City, Mo., formed The Kreamy Krunchies to submit an a cappella version of the jingle after Carroll’s mother informed him of the contest.

The Kreamy Krunchies were selected for the top ten, and their music video was seen by thousands of Americans. From Aug. 24 through Sept. 4, online viewers voted for their favorite video.

The results were tallied Sept. 10, revealing the BYU-I students among the top five.

Carroll brought his mother’s suggestion, his melody and his other ideas to Denney, Geddes and Heier, who previously performed together in an a capella band called Poprox.

In a couple of hours, the jingle was done, the final performance recorded in the Snow Recital Hall.

“We put it together and said, ‘Hey this sounds kind of catchy’,” Heier said.

The group gained confidence in their jingle as they sent it to their friends. “They came back to us and said they couldn’t it get it out of their heads,” Heier said.

Although people entered from all over the country, “We felt really good about our song and we were hopeful, although nothing was sure,” Denney said.

“We just knew we had something good,” Heier said.

As finalists, Denney, Geddes, Carroll and Heier will split $1,000 and travel to New York City to compete for the $10,000 grand prize in Times Square. On Sept. 27, they will perform in front of host Carson Daly, a panel of judges and everyone in sight of the jumbo-screen TV towering over the square.

“It’s almost surreal right now,” Heier said. “It’s weird.”

Denney said they are having this experience because of outside support. “We want to thank any one who voted for us to get us to the top five, because that’s the only way we made it,” he said.

While the video is no longer on the Oreo website, it can still be viewed on YouTube□

Oreo Jingle

Oh, oh, oh,
Ice cold milk and an Oreo cookie
They forever go together—what a classic combination
When a dark delicious cookie meets an icy cold sensation
Like the one and only creamy, crunchy, choc-o-late O-R-E-O.
