Tabernacle Choir, Dallyn Vail Bayles release new music
Released Feb. 13, Showtime! Music of Broadway and Hollywood is the first Mormon Tabernacle CD in which many of the songs were selected through listener requests.
According to the Choir’s Web site, www.mormontabernaclechoir.com, the top vote getters were Sunrise, Sunset
from Fiddler on the Roof, The Impossible Dream
from Man of La Mancha, Bring Him Home
from Les Misérables, Who Will Buy
and Where is Love?
from Oliver, and You’ll Never Walk Alone
from Carousel.
Showtime! also includes songs from some Hollywood blockbusters: In Dreams
from The Lord of the Rings, When You Wish upon a Star
from Pinocchio and Hymn to the Fallen
from Saving Private Ryan.
Because the Tabernacle is getting remodeled, the Choir had to record this CD in the Conference Center. Since the Conference Center is so big, the Choir had to be moved down by the Orchestra on the stage. According the Choir’s Web site, special acoustic equipment had to be temporarily installed to keep the sound from quickly dispersing into the vast overhead space.
Dallyn Vail Bayles, an actor and singer from Green River, Utah, released his first solo album, Prayer earlier this month. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may not recognize the name, but they may recognize him as Hyrum Smith in the Church’s feature-length film Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration.
Bayles’s new inspirational CD features 10 songs about the power and reality of prayers, including an arrangement of Bring Him Home
from Les Misérables. Other songs include Not too Far from Here
and My Kindness Shall Not Depart from Thee,
the latter featuring the Brigham Young University Singers.
Each song on this album was carefully chosen not just because it fit the concept of prayer, but because each one has a personal and spiritual connection to my life experience,
Bayles said in a press release. When people listen, I hope they feel the Spirit of the Lord and are inspired, uplifted, comforted, taught and made better as a result. It is a reverent and worshipful album. It is heartfelt.
Bayles was cast as Feuilly and later Enjolras in the Broadway touring company of Les Misérables for a year and a half. A little closer to home, he played the lead role of Alma Richards in the LDS Church production of Light of the World during the 2002 Winter Olympics and Joseph in the cast of Savior of the World.
