Families fight media filth
|
| One Utah man is determined to unite others to fight pornography and preserve the family.
“The choices we make in media can be symbolic of the choices we make in life,” said Nathan Steineckert from Pleasant Grove, Utah. Steineckert saw the media that surrounded him and decided take some action. He formed Clean Media United, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting family-friendly media. “We unite as many people, communities, churches, governments and schools who are willing to stand together for truth. We highlight, thank and support all those who use family-friendly media in advertising and promoting,” Steineckert said. Steineckert has met with leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches to discuss ways to unite efforts in the support of families. Clean Media United is also filming an anti-pornography documentary. “We have interviewed many authorities on the subject as well as pro athletes, Academy Award-winning filmmakers and humanitarians. The feedback has been great,” Steineckert said. Clean Media United is still in its beginning stages, but Steineckert said that in the near future events will be held to train people on how to protect their families. “Within the year, people throughout the country will know about us.” Like Steineckert, students at BYU-Idaho express the need to be in control of the media. “I don’t watch TV or listen to the radio. This allows me to control the media I consume instead of leaving that up to networks for them to decide,” said Evan Macdonald, a sophomore from Tacoma, Wash. Many BYU-I students take advantage of the innovations in technology to choose how they will entertain themselves. The Internet offers reviews of movies and music, which aids in deciding if a movie or CD is appropriate. The Web browser Mozilla Firefox allows users to block advertisements that contain models in bathing suits and underclothing. But other people prefer to control their media consumption by getting out and finding other entertainment.
