Student writers discover ‘Outlet’
Student writers and artists seeking for literary exposure and experience may submit to Outlet: The BYU-Idaho Literary Journal by Jan. 5.

Outlet is a great opportunity for students to get experience and improve their resume, said Brother Jim Richards, a professor in the English Department and director for Outlet.

Every winter semester the English 418 Creative Writing and Publishing class acts as an editorial board to choose and edit student writings and artwork to publish in the Outlet journal every year.

“They are the ones who select the works,” Richards said. “We try to have students do as much [of the work] as possible.”

Stephanie Quinton, a junior from Cardston, Alberta, Canada, said that the opportunities at this university [like being on an editorial board or submitting to the journal] teach what is behind the scenes. Instead of learning about the subject in a class you get hands on experience.

“Outlet is extremely beneficial, because as a creative writer, and currently sending out queries, it gives me more weight,” said Lars Wight, a senior from Portland, Ore., who was published in the last edition of Outlet.

Wight said they have a lot of really good writers and there aren’t enough opportunities to get published. He said BYU-I needs additional regular opportunity for students to get published.

Wight has found success in writing and reading everyday.

“Beyond that, don’t be afraid to send your work out. Read a lot in your emphasis, find out about the industry, go to conferences and enter contests,” Wight said.

Students interested in submitting their written or art work to Outlet may find a form on the BYU-I Web site on the English Department page or may pick up a form in the English Department Office, Smith Annex 110.
