CD player: $10 “D.I. special.” Baseball bat: $5. Winning the BYU-Idaho 24-hour film festival without getting arrested: priceless.
David Wehle, a freshman from Stafford, Va., took first place in the BYU-I 24-hour Film Festival Friday, Oct. 27 in the Taylor Chapel overflow.
His comedic short film, How I learned to Embrace the Roomies, talked about the inevitable quirks of living with roommates.
One roommate didn’t want to clean the dishes, so he cut the top off an almost-empty milk carton and poured his cereal in there instead of a bowl.
Another roommate got so fed up with loud music at midnight that he drove to Wal-Mart, purchased a bat, drove home and to the horror of the other roommates, proceeded to hit the guilty CD player to splinters.
Filming started Thursday, Oct. 19, and post-production took most of the weekend.
“We pretty much locked ourselves in my room for eight to nine hours,” Wehle said about the editing process.
Wehle and his real-life roommates combined efforts to create the film. They said production went smoothly except for one minor detail: Wal-Mart doesn’t allow filming in their stores.
“We hid the camera under my hoodie,” Wehle said.
