Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles told Ricks College graduates in 2001 that contrary to standard commencement addresses, he would not talk of proud dreams and high hopes.
Instead, he talked about the need for determination to live the Gospel and raise a good family.
“Your greatest challenges and rewards will be found in mastering yourself and in strengthening your family,” Elder Nelson said. “Above all else, you should strive to become a good husband or wife, a responsible father or mother and a respected citizen in the kingdom and family of God.”
His speech was the last given to Ricks College graduates, as the school changed its name to BYU-Idaho the following year.
Five years later, Elder Nelson is returning to Rexburg to speak at BYU-I’s winter graduation.
The ceremony will be Saturday, April 29, at 9 a.m.
Elder Nelson has been serving as an Apostle since April 7, 1984, according to a biography on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint’s Web site.
He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Utah and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota.
Prior to his service as an Apostle, Elder Nelson worked as a surgeon and medical researcher.
Elder Nelson was married in the Salt Lake Temple on April 6 of this year to BYU professor Wendy L. Watson, his second wife.
His first wife, Dantzel White, passed away in February 2005. They have 10 children.
