Fathers’ weekend soon?

Mothers’ weekend was a blast for me because I have one gnarly mom. The events that were available on campus made the weekend enjoyable for both of us, but they got me thinking — I just can’t wait for Fathers’ Weekend.

Yes, I know, there is no Fathers’ Weekend, and it’s a shame. Since we have no legitimate spring break, and many of us rarely get to go home, there ought to be a Fathers’ Weekend with a variety of dad-oriented activities.

Fathers’ Weekend would be similar to Mothers’ Weekend, but with different seminars, performances, workshops and concerts available.

Instead of scrapbooking, they’ll learn how to tie fishing lures and watch sporting movies on the great fishing holes in the United States. Instead of a Broadway Review, we’ll put on a Super Bowl review: re-living football’s greatest moments on stage.

In place of the bridal fair, we’d hold a home improvement fair featuring the latest in man-toys and their uses. We could even add in a special seminar on how to program the time on VCRs. The luncheons would include rib roasts and steak.

Elders-quorum-style forums would be held to debate doctrine that is “not relevant to our salvation” — just to make dad feel at home. We’d need to replace the Mothers’ Weekend wagon ride and dinner with a sort of “Mormon’s Angels” motorcycle rally that tours Rexburg and surrounding areas.

The floral fair would be dull for any dad. Fathers’ Weekend would sponsor a classic car showcase. BYU-I could even take a year to collect the city’s old toilets, sinks and propane tanks in order to do a Fathers’ Weekend shotgun shooting event. We’ll call it “Day of Destruction.”

Just think about it; it could be the coolest thing you’ll ever do with your dad. And ladies, if you aren’t so excited about learning how to make fishing ties or blowing things up, think about the sacrifice all us manly men make to attend the scrapbooking fair with our mothers. Every dad deserves the same kind of fun our moms had. Well, maybe a different kind of fun.
