There’s a new event on campus where students meet once a month to perform and practice their musical talents.
The event is called Open Mic and offers a wide range of musical performances. Songs performed range from Josh Groban to Collective Soul to Broadway musicals to Kelly Clarkson.
Open Mic started up last semester and was originally called Garden Recitals.
Quinton Lundeen, a freshman from Lewisville, Texas, said the name changed because they wanted the concerts to have a more relaxed feeling. They thought the name Open Mic reflected this better than the original name.
Michelle Perroni, a freshman from LaGrande, Ore., started Open Mic and is in charge of organizing the event, which takes place at least once a month.
“Open Mic is for students who haven’t performed much before,” Perroni said. “For many of the students this is their first time in front of an audience.”
Because of this, the atmosphere at Open Mic is purposefully kept very casual and relaxed.
“We don’t have any judges, and there are no tryouts,” Lundeen said.
Audiences have grown bigger over time and there are a few regular bands that perform at each concert.
Open Mic is open to all talent. Anyone who wants to perform needs to sign up through Perroni via e-mail at per05005@byui.edu.
The next Open Mic will take place April 7. The theme for the night is “Karaoke, Free Style.” In addition to the regular performances there will also be a karaoke machine. Any type of musical performance is welcome.
Open Mic is usually held at 7 p.m. in the MC Special Events Room.
