‘Irrational but well-rounded’ read shirts of Pi fans at the BYU-Idaho math department celebration of Pi Day.
“We’re a growing number of math departments that celebrate Pi day around the world.” said Ann Marie Harris, a mathematics faculty member.
Harris and mathematics faculty members David Stowell and Jennie Youngberg organized the event.
The event began with a song celebrating pi.
Four students and two teachers each got individual full-sized pies, the only catch was they had to try to devour it before the other five.
Tyson Crowther, a sophomore from Papillion, Neb., won the pie eating contest.
A presentation of the history of pi was given during the event by mathematics faculty member Troy Goodsell.
“Hopefully we can open [Pi day] up in the future to the math club, but for now it’s just math majors,” Youngberg said.
Pi is summarized as 3.14, though Rachelle Miller, a sophomore from Rigby, Idaho, was able to recite 28 digits after the decimal at the celebration.
“Mostly [Pi day] is just a chance to have a social with faculty and students. We try to have an activity at least once a semester,” Stowell said.
