The Man and Woman of the Year were announced at an awards presentation March 16. The Man and Woman of the Year are selected annually from nine finalist candidates who have been nominated by an academic college or the Activities Program. Janelle Johnson, a senior from Dayton, Idaho, and Bret Mitchell, a senior from Meridian, Idaho, were this year’s recipients of the award.
Janelle Johnson • Woman of the Year
Q: What are your goals?
A: “Travel, marriage, family and community involvement. Eventually, I would like to earn a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy.”
Q: How has coming to BYU-Idaho influenced your life?
A: “One of the things that has significantly changed my life has been my experience at BYU-Idaho. The Activities Program especially has influenced my life ... and helped me see my potential.”
Q: How do you feel about receiving this award?
A: “There are multiple women on this campus who are as worthy representatives of womanhood. BYU-Idaho women are something unique in this world.”

Bret Mitchell • Man of the YearQ: What are your goals?
A: “To improve myself and those around me ... to earn an MBA or a doctorate ... I also hope to teach my family and travel together.”
Q: How has coming to BYU-Idaho influenced your life?
A: “I consider my time here one of the grandest of all privileges. To me, this privilege, made possible by tithe payers throughout the world, has developed into a responsibility to ... be a light to the world.”
Q: How do you feel about receiving this award?
A: “I do not deserve to be Man of the Year, but the honor is appreciated. The individuals who were recognized Thursday are only a reflection of the wonderful student body on this campus.”
