Boys, invite your moms!

Since Mothers’ Weekend is organized through the Associated Women’s Society there is a chance the men on campus feel they ought to let the women and their mothers have all the fun.

Not so.

The AWS has planned special events and activities for the men and their mothers to do this weekend as well. Mothers’ Weekend is not just for the women.

“A brief list of events catering to mothers and sons are the Mother/son look alike contest, mother/son buffet, workshops, mother/son volleyball, the canoe trip and then some of the various music/comedy/stage events they might be interested in,” said Ashley Hull, the Women’s Director on campus.

Hull said another reason the men may not feel comfortable inviting their mothers is the lodging issue. Most mothers end up staying with their daughters in their apartments, but the mother of a boy can’t do that and is forced to find lodging elsewhere.

Ryan Dudley, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., thinks it’s more important for a guy to have his girlfriend’s mother here rather than his own mother.

“Mothers’ Weekend is a time for guys to meet the mothers of the girls they’re interested in. That’s why their own mothers don’t come,” Dudley said.

The AWS has tried encouraging the men on campus to remind their mother about the weekend by sending a postcard to the mother of every freshman on campus. The postcard encourages the parent to consider attending the event.

Another step the AWS has taken to welcome the mothers of BYU-Idaho men is to keep their advertising neutral.

“As part of the women’s events council, we have tried to keep our advertising of the event gender neutral and appealing to all students,” Hull said.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, the AWS wants everyone to invite his or her mother for this special weekend. It provides a chance for mothers to see the apartments, meet the roommates and maybe even cook dinner for their favorite BYU-I student.
