From concerts to workshops to firesides, Mothers’ Weekend is full of various activities and things to do.

But all these fun things don’t just plan themselves. If it weren’t for the dedicated students of the Women’s Events Council, formerly known as Activities for Women Students, none of these activities would take place.

The Women’s Events Council has been busy since last November planning the numerous activities that occur on campus during Mothers’ Weekend, which is scheduled for March 17-19.

Some things WEC is in charge of planning and carrying out include luncheons, a service project, Man and Woman of the Year and the fireside with Sister Susan K. Bednar.

With so much to plan, one wonders how it all gets done.

“I have wonderful coordinators. Each of them has a section of the things that we’re planning that they are in charge of. It’s the best way we can get everyone involved,” said Ashley Hull, a senior from Victoria, British Columbia, and student director of WEC.

Those planning Mothers’ Weekend hope students and mothers will get involved and enjoy their time together.

“The whole point of planning and carrying out Mothers’ Weekend is to see people get involved and have them experience what the Spirit of Ricks is all about,” said Christine Borgersen, a junior from Edmond, Okla., and representative of WEC.

Though planning for the weekend takes a lot of their time, WEC members find it rewarding to be able to serve.

“It’s a fantastic way to serve a large amount of people on campus. It’s really fun letting the moms see how their children are doing at college and to see how well we’ve done because they’ve helped us get here. It’s quite rewarding,” Hull said.

When all is said and done, those who help plan Mothers’ Weekend activities for students and their mothers on campus are pleased with the results.

“I am always more than satisfied with the way things turn out. It’s more than amazing,” said Emily Rowlee, a senior from Vacaville, Calif., and coordinator for WEC.

WEC members also experience personal growth in helping plan and coordinate the activities.

“Even if everything we have worked on were to totally flop, we would still be better people for having this experience. What we gain from participating in this is invaluable,” Borgersen said.

Under the leadership of the Activities Program, WEC sponsors activities and speakers to help women reach their potential in every area of life.

Some other events WEC sponsors besides Mothers’ Weekend are Fall Focus on Women, Christmas Tree Lane and the Miss BYU-Idaho Pageant.

Look for the ladies in the red jackets. Members of WEC will be on campus during Mothers’ Weekend to help answer questions and direct people around campus.
