The bookstore is our friend
A confession to shake the balance of the universe

I have a confession.

We all do. I know it, and soon you will know it.

I’d like to apologize to my hippie-new-world-order friends, whose lone joy in life is to stick it to the man while watching Scooby-Doo reruns. I wanted to put it to the man, but I just can’t. Not when we’re dealing with something so lovely, so refined, so … pure: the BYU-Idaho Bookstore.

I know my claims that the bookstore is indeed good for all of us will cause not just ripples in the water, but a complete unbalancing of the universe. And how could it not? So many of us have grown up thinking the bookstore is the root of all evil with its “expensive” school supplies, lack of discounts and outrageous textbook prices.

But before we put this paper down to grab our pitchforks and torches, let’s think this through and wonder — do I have need of confession?

I say unto you: yea, my friends.

First off, the prices at the bookstore aren’t that terrible. The price of clothing like sweatshirts, t-shirts and the like are all competitive as well. Let’s not forget also that many times through the semester the entryway of the bookstore is loaded with merchandise that has been discounted for quicker sale (though it is unlikely I will buy scriptures with the name Esmerelda Martinez on them).

Textbooks. Blaming the bookstore for these prices is sheer idiocy. It really is. Be offended if you will, but the publishers set the prices and the bookstore really makes hardly any money on them. The majority goes to the publisher. Delving in further would be interesting, but is not really in the scope of this article. Therefore, let us continue.

I buy things at the bookstore all the time. When I’m checking out, I’m greeted by smiling and happy women. And lets be honest, what’s there to complain about here? Whether they’re young ladies or … experienced young ladies, the fact is they’re nice to be around.

What am I confessing, you might ask?

Simple. I love the bookstore. I like to go inside and look around. Thumb through a novel a bit, see what new computer software they have (which, by the way can be dramatically cheaper than the same software sold elsewhere). I could NEVER go against it. My BYU-I Bookstore is my guilty pleasure — almost to the height of the teenybopper show Degrassi.

So, my friends, not all of you may agree with what’s printed in these weekly pages. Maybe we’ve had moments of extreme stupidity when we’ve wanted to threaten the Scroll by saying we’d burn every single newspaper on campus if it didn’t print what we agreed with. Beastly we are sometimes, no?

But joyfully, you and I can have a commonality. The bookstore is our friend. Unbalance in the universe doesn’t need to happen!

It takes just one little thing from each of us — a confession.
